Operation Grow Something, by Simeon Vialva

This Blog, titled Operation Grow Something, is my(simeon vialva) emisson and detailed account of my journey of my last design semester of grad school at Pratt Institute. This Blog isn't meant to brag or showcase the latest rendering techniques, or show cool affects in after affects but rather show in detail the challenges a thesis architecture student goes through. The last design semesters I've dealt with WATER & AEROPONICS as my main characters, in Carla Leitao and Peter Macapia Design studios. Dealing with public schools of finding ways how architecture can engage not only the social engagements of students but find ways of creating an innovative environment for the re-use of water and farming. To designing a Vertical farms in dense areas of NYC. These Two design studios have led me to on a course directed at my thesis research of finding key solutions of designing a New York City of the future.

columbarium

using the script to generate the core and the facade of ceremony room/niches storage. the park/plaza penetrating the columbarium lead to the children center on the higher level and and the senior center on the lower level. the exposed structure can be filled as the deceased increase.

SKIN TEST

TEST RENDERING WITH SHRIN WRAPPED SKIN/NET.

Operation Vertical Growth. Act 4.1: Tower growth

These are more studies on the 1.) Tower membrane, highlighted in green, as you can see it is essential a sine wave, if you can imagine at the base of this membrane it spreads into the land, and as it progress up its becomes tighter and wraps the housing and more aeroponic green houses. Then pertruding out at the sides, are more farm fields. I imagine that many of these farm cells are traditional as it goes out onto the land. As, of this moment the skin its not yet articulated, just a rough sketch of where im at. 2.)Also, attached are some diagrams of how I see the farm ground being used. Idon't see the the farm land being flat, but as an adaptive ground system where it will create a surface to be adjusted to the plants root zone + water supply. These sketchs highlight my interest in developing an adaptive ground for the farm.

Hi, sorry for the delay.

he is where i stand as of... 6:55, im tired so i explain it more in the morning...err... when i get back to work.

Operation Vertical Grow: Act 4: Tower Growth

These are the latest renders of how I see the the tower growing and spreading on the landscape. The strategy behind the placement, is having the center of the model house the apartment units, and to the left and right of it, it will lead into the aeroponic green houses, and then as it reaches farther out to more traditonal farming. I've also tested out the aeroponic green houses by covering each indvidual cell.

PROGRESS THUS FAR...

Here is some udated versions of my structure...I broke up the vertical system into two parts, designated to different parts of the program and was thinking about articulating areas in betwen that could connect (i.e. for specific performance, etc.) Still trying to define/work out circulation as well as formulate a system that defines the movement of the curtain wall scaffold system. Will continue to explore and update as I go!

Progress image

This is a section of the building, just to show where I'm going with it. It feels much more elegant and better than Monday's work.

POP-UP GROUPS

USING FACEBOOK GROUPS AS THE GENERATOR, THE CONVENTION CENTER IS RE IMAGINED AS A COLLECTION OF PROGRAMS THAT HAVE A HIERARCHY OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THEM. INITIAL FACEBOOK GROUPS ARE MANIFESTED IN PHYSICAL SPACE AND THE FOLLOWERS OF THESE GROUPS ARE NOTIFIED THAT THEIR SPACE IS AVAILABLE TO VIEW. HERE LIKE-MINDED INDIVIDUALS CAN COME TOGETHER IN REAL SPACE TO INTERACT. FROM THERE A RECOMMENDATION ENGINE IS USED TO CIRCULATE PEOPLE THROUGH THE TOWER TO *TRADE SHOWS* BASED ON COMMON INTEREST OR TO CONNECTING PROGRAMS (LIKE A BOOKSTORE) THAT ALLOW FOR MORE THAN ONE GROUP TO BE REFERENCED AND CONNECTED.
THE GROUPS ONLY HAVE A PHYSICAL LIFE SPAN OF 3 MONTHS, REQUIRING THE BUILDING TO CONSTANTLY RECONFIGURE ITSELF THROUGH THE ATTACHMENT AND DISCONNECTION OF THE GROUP MODULE. MODULES CAN BE CONNECTED TOGETHER TO FORM LARGER SPACES AS REQUIRED. A FLEXIBLE MEMBRANE IS *SHRINK WRAPPED* TO THE VOLUME OF THE TOWER, KEEPING EVERYTHING TOGETHER WHILE ALLOWING FOR THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE SYSTEM TO HAPPEN.

Aggregation Development

Using the basic component, the following displays the experimented aggregation scripts to create a useful aggregated unit. The last one is used to define the overall exterior skin of the structure. It will also searve to as a sun shader and to promote solar power, displayed by colored layors. This is under development to coorespond to the performance space program.
